Definition of a B.O.S.S – Building bridges & Overcoming obstacles with optimism, Service & Sacrifice

This week I received an award for being a “TOP BOSS” in New Orleans.  The award presentation was part of a promotional event to a new- movie starring Melissa McCarthy called “The Boss.”  As part of the event, I was one of four honorees who shared our thoughts on what it means to be a #BOSS. I shared a little of my Kiki’s Keys to Success ™ Here are my thoughts:

B – Building Bridges
A few weeks ago, I was on a panel discussing the attributes of good leadership. As the panelists shared their thoughts, a common theme emerged around the importance of “CONNECTION.”  A great leader creates pathways that establish solid relationships. I am a witness that the ability to connect with others is a key #BOSSMOVE.  Bridges serve in a similar capacity, connecting lands over water to create pathways to travel anywhere.  A true #BOSS creates pathways to success by “BUILDING BRIDGES”.

O- Overcoming obstacles with optimism
Being a boss when resources are limited and expectations are high can be challenging. A true BOSS is one who not only ensures connection, but also inspires. Kiki’s Key to overcoming obstacles is mostly about your perspective.  I recently witnessed this with a current student member of my team.  She stared out my office window, watching the rain come down, creating puddles of water on ground.  She turned to me and said, “I wish I had some rain boots.”  I said, “why?”  She replied, “So I can play in the water obstacle course.”  I looked at her and said, “That’s what I’m talking about!  Most people look at puddles and complain about the flooding and how it hinders their ability to get from one building to the next.  You just changed my whole mindset about this.”  That student gave me inspiration and hope that with rain boots and her as my leader, we could make it through the obstacle course. Having a perspective of optimism is the key.

S- Service
One of the things that stood out to me the most during the awards program was the amount of community service in which each honoree was engaged.  Service to mankind is the least a true #BOSS can do.

S- Sacrifice
A true #BOSS understands that sacrifice is key to achieving success.  It’s important that your staff, team and colleagues know that you are willing to go the extra mile to ensure that all of you meet your goals.

Shout out to to all of the true BOSSES!
